In the Spotlight: Sycamores' Utilization of the ARTIC Scale

February 19, 2025 / by Tasha Reece, M.S.

For nearly 25 years, the Traumatic Stress Institute has been a leader in trauma-informed education, training, and practice, driven by the mission to transform systems and deliver exceptional care to those in need. Sycamores is a trusted human services organization with a legacy spanning over 120 years in Southern California, and they share this commitment. Please note: this content was planned prior to the California wildfires.

With a mission to inspire hope and build resilience for children, adults, and families, Sycamores has long been committed to incorporating trauma-informed care into their core philosophy. In 2021, they were awarded a SAMHSA federal grant which provided the opportunity to further enhance their trauma-informed care practice by adopting the Risking Connection Change Model (RCCM).

One example of this commitment is their robust use of the ARTIC (Attitudes Related to Trauma-Informed Care) Scale to inform internal decision-making and contribute to the growing body of research on trauma-informed interventions. The ARTIC Scale, co-developed by Dr. Courtney Baker of Tulane University and the Traumatic Stress Institute, is one of the most widely used measures of trauma-informed care, with over 300,000 administrations globally.

According to Sycamores Director of Clinical Training and Implementation, Eleanor Owen:

“Sycamores analyzes ARTIC results by program, then collaborates with leaders using a mapping tool to identify change strategies to target improving trauma-informed care practices.”

The Sycamores team is dedicated to ensuring their consumers receive support in line with current trauma-informed care best practices through ongoing learning, implementation, and evaluation. Equally important to them is an emphasis on promoting staff well-being and resilience by working to counteract the impact of vicarious trauma.
