Implementing Trauma-Informed Care in Early Head Start/Head Start Programs

At the Traumatic Stress Institute (TSI) of Klingberg Family Centers, we support Head Start agencies with a whole-system approach to trauma-informed care. TSI believes that Early Head Start/Head Start programs can function as protective factors that buffer and mitigate the effects of childhood adversity and trauma for staff, families, and children, creating conditions where resiliency can flourish.

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) defines a trauma-informed approach – using the 4R's – as one that:

  • Realizes the widespread impact of trauma and pathways to recovery
  • Recognizes trauma signs and symptoms
  • Responds by integrating awareness about trauma into all facets of the system
  • Resists re-traumatization of trauma-impacted individuals by decreasing unnecessary triggers

Learn more about our 18-24 month Risking Connection Change Model (RCCM) by joining us for a free webinar where we will ground attendees in the basics of trauma-informed care (TIC). More importantly, we will discuss how TIC can strengthen Early Head Start/Head Start Programs AND explain how to determine organizational readiness to make this rewarding (and challenging) change. Early Head Start/Head Start Programs that enter into a contract with TSI by March 31, 2025 can begin their change journey in Spring, Summer, or Fall of 2025.

Chris Greene is the Marketing Coordinator for the Traumatic Stress Institute of Klingberg Family Centers. Her focus is on maintaining a sense of community and on implementing systems improvements in order to enhance clients’ experience. Projects have included renovation of the TSI website; improvement in brand cohesion and recognition; creation of an RC community newsletter; engagement of new vendors; collaboration with other TSI staff to launch a CRM system that improved our ability to manage growing complexities around implementation; and improvement of materials production, meeting tracking, and most recently the RC curriculum as part of the revision team.
